For those of you who are new, we love doing service journalism here. Each weekend we use the Watchgridometer to guide you through the MLS weekend that awaits. By giving each game a watchability score using the plusometer*, we can categorize each game into three levels ranging from “I would check that out” to “You absolutely have to check that out”.
As we move down the stretch run, we’ve also added a “playoffocity” score that measures how much impact the game will have on the playoff race, and oh my god we’ve added so much to what used to be a very simple thing In the last two years of The Daily Kickoff, new readers will think this is crazy.
See: tier one games are good, tier three games are great. That’s all you need to know.
*The plusometer is a scientific method used to quantify the potential watchability of a given game on MLS LIVE on ESPN+, but can and is used for all other channels as well. Using the elements “Potential for very good/entertaining bad football”, “Created chances”, “NARRATIVE”, “Aesthetics” and “Totally subjective bonus points”, I assign a score of 10 to each element and a score of 50 to each game. Twenty-five is average potential. Fifty is the greatest game of all time. Yes, I actually calculate every game. No, I don’t know why. Respect for form maybe?
