`Most-watched World Cup 2022 games on US TV and streaming

The World Cup is always one of the top TV attractions in the US, and 2022 is no different. The group stage games with the big teams and stars are among the most watched games of the 2022 World Cup until the round of 16.

The most watched World Cup games so far

The United States was a guest in four of the six most-watched games of this year’s World Cup. Anticipation for USA’s return to the World Cup was certainly high after the USMNT failed to qualify for Russia in 2018, and the numbers bear that out. Of course, these games are more likely to attract the casual American viewer who doesn’t usually follow football but tunes in to see the USA.

The US fills the top four English-language spots on FOX and FS1, with the biggest of that group being the Black Friday showdown between the US and England. The game averaged over 20,000,000 total viewers in English and Spanish. Over 15 million of those viewers were in English alone, which would be enough to rank it as the third largest draw overall.

Argentina-Mexico a record holder

On the Spanish-speaking side, Telemundo/Peacock pulled in in large numbers. The top match in Spanish, as expected, was Messi and Argentina against arguably America’s most popular sports team… El Tri. An average of 9 million viewers tuned in to ARG-MEX, making it the most-watched Spanish-language group stage game in history. Over 2 million of those viewers streamed the game, making it the most-streamed World Cup game in US history — regardless of language. Total Spanish viewership for 2022 so far is second in the last eight World Cups, behind only 2014 in Brazil, which had a better viewing window for the United States.

Mexico’s 0-0 group stage draw with Poland rounded out the top five on Telemundo/Peacock with 4.6 million viewers, with Brazil, Spain and the USA also topping the Spanish-language rankings.

Impressive World Cup numbers

The totals are somewhat a mix of the top of the English and Spanish rankings and are similarly focused on the big teams and star players. The USA leads with four appearances in the top ten, Mexico and Argentina in two games each. Strong sides Brazil, Germany, Spain and Portugal round out the notable teams that appear in the top ten.

We can certainly expect to continue seeing strong viewership on both FOX and Telemundo when the tournament concludes and the Quarterfinals begin on December 9th.
