CHAMPAGNE, Ill.— Illinois Men’s Gymnastics Trio Connor McCool, Ian Skirkey and Ashton Anaya All achieved first place in their respective events at the inaugural College Gymnastics Association All Star Games.
Each gymnast was not only nominated by their coach to take part in the games, but also selected by a committee and voted for by the fans. The gymnasts recorded their routine in advance and were judged by the judges in a virtual event on a ten-point system.
The All-Star Games pitted all 15 men’s gymnastics schools against each other and were divided into East and West teams: Team East consisted of Air Force, Cal, Greenville, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Simpson, and Stanford. Team West included: Army, Illinois, Michigan, Navy, Ohio State, Penn State, Springfield, and William and Mary. Four athletes were chosen for each event to represent East or West along with their program.
McCool competed in the floor exercise and received a 9.25 to earn his first place.
Skirkey and Anaya earned a solid 9.00 for their first place titles – Skirkey on the pommel horse and Anaya is still wrestling.
Two other Illini competed in the All Star Games, senior Evan Manivong and transfer in the second year Amari Sewell. Both competed in vault, with Sewell scoring a 9.75, 0.25 from a first place finish, and Manivong an 8.75.
Illinois will kick off its season on January 14 with the annual Windy City Invitational in Chicago, Illinois at 6 p.m. at Navy Pier.
