Lionel Messi is now among the few elite players to have ever played in 1,000 career games for club and country and in fact even the Argentine maestro couldn’t believe he would pull off the incredible feat.
The 35-year-old Talisman recorded his 1000th career game during the World Cup Round of 16 match against Australia. La Pulga started the competition and actually opened the scoring with a goal in the 35th minute to give Argentina the lead. The Argentines won the showdown 2-1.
Days after making history, Messi took to social media to react to his personal milestone. Of course he is grateful for the amazing journey he had in sharing his true feelings to play 1000 games.
“1k games already smh And I always felt with the same illusion when I played as a professional for the first time. Thank you to everyone who is accompanying me on this beautiful journey,” Messi wrote translated on Instagram.
Lionel Messi has made 169 appearances for Argentina (senior team), with most of his appearances (778) coming during his time at Barcelona as a member of the first team. He has played in 53 games for Paris Saint-Germain to complete his 1000 game accomplishment.
Sure enough, Messi hopes to add at least three more to that number at the World Cup. They will play the Netherlands in the quarter-finals with high expectations of making it to the semi-finals and the final.
Messi is yet to win the World Cup with Argentina so a title in Qatar would definitely be the ultimate reward for him.
