Rush is expected to start against the Bengals on Sunday after stepping in for Prescott in the fourth quarter of the Cowboys’ 19-3 loss to the Bucs. Rush and Grier are both currently on the practice team.
Jones added that given the offensive experience of the current backup quarterbacks, it was “unlikely” that the club would field an experienced quarterback to replace Prescott in the short term.
“These guys know the offense well, they have a lot of repetitions in it and consequently they give us our best,” said Jones.
Prescott suffered a fracture to his right thumb against the Bucs and underwent surgery Monday to repair it. Jones said the medical staff’s prognosis was that “Dak has a real chance of getting back out there and throwing the ball pretty quickly.”
Putting Prescott on IR would mean an absence of at least four games, so the club are clearly optimistic he could potentially return within the next month.
