How Nick Bosa’s mom chose Joey’s Chargers-Jaguars game over 49ers-Seahawks

It’s not easy being the super mom to two NFL stars. But Cheryl Bosa makes it work.

This week’s conundrum: Her sons — 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa and Los Angeles Chargers edge rusher Joey Bosa — both have playoff games on Saturday. Timing and distance are an issue, however, as Nick faces the Jaguars in Santa Clara, where the 49ers host the Seattle Seahawks at 1:30 p.m. PT, and Joey on the opposite coast at 5:15 p.m. in Jacksonville, Fla

Ultimately, Mama Bosa had to decide which game to attend.

“I’ve been praying that I could achieve both,” Cheryl told Ashley Adamson and Lisa McCaffrey on the Your Mom podcast. “Obviously I wasn’t lucky this weekend. Hopefully I’ll do that next weekend.

“Joey was injured this year. I was at a couple of his first games, I was at the game he went down in, and then he was away for 10 or 12 weeks. I went back to his first game, that was two weeks ago. I guess it’s just a numbers game, you know? I have to be there for him.”

Joey recorded six tackles (two for losses), 1.5 sacks and one forced fumble in the first two games of his seventh NFL season before missing out in Week 3 with a groin injury. He was out 13 straight games before returning in Week 17, and he still finished the season with the sixth-most sacks and shared the first quarterback hits with the Chargers.

“I was just at Nick’s, we went out to eat on Sunday after the game [against the Arizona Cardinals]’ Cheryl said. “And I just said, ‘Babe, I’m really sorry, but I’m going to Joey’s game,’ and he said, ‘Absolutely, mom.’ “

While Joey wasn’t there, Nick solidified his case as NFL Defensive Player of the Year. He finished the season with a league-high 18.5 sacks, just below Aldon Smith’s single-season franchise record of 19.5 set in 2012.

The 49ers are heading into the postseason on a 10-game winning streak and will look to build on that for Mama Bosa to cheer for the DPOY frontrunner at Levi’s Stadium next week.
