#8 March 2, 2022 vs Pacemaker

Although the Magic fell short in overtime, Franz Wagner was sensational that night with 28 points in 10-of-18 shooting from the floor and 4-of-6 from 3-point range. Mo Bamba, who helped send the game to OT with a crucial shot in the final seconds of regulation, also had one of his better performances with 19 points on 8-of-9 shooting and 12 rebounds.

With both teams understaffed due to the COVID surge sweeping the country at the time, Wagner stepped up and led the Magic to a 25-point victory over the Hawks.

In a game featuring two of the best players from the 2021 NBA draft class — No. 1 pick Cade Cunningham, the other — Wagner shone in a win over the Pistons by 24 points on an efficient 7-of-12 shooting . Cunningham, on the other hand, struggled that night, scoring just eight points on 3-of-17 overall shooting and 0-of-5-3-point shooting.

Just two nights later, while the Mavs were in town, Wagner hit the biggest shot of the game. On a score of 107, he cruised down the lane with Dorian Finney-Smith guarding him and connected with a go-ahead floater with 54 seconds left. He’d had two more big shots earlier in the fourth quarter as part of his 18-point night in Orlando’s thrilling win.

Despite failing in the last few seconds to make a skilful layup that would have given Orlando the lead, Wagner was sensational that night in Indiana, amassing 29 points – the third-most of his career so far. He shot 9 of 17 from the field overall and 5 of 9 from 3-point range.

Probably the first aha moment that enlightened us all about Wagner’s supreme skill was when he scored 28 points in Orlando’s win over Minnesota. The 6ft 10, versatile forward had 10 of Orlando’s 43 points in the fourth quarter, while Cole Anthony had 14 of his 31 points in the last frame.

Wagner broke out for a career-best 38 points against the Bucks, who went by the third-highest point in Magic history by a rookie. It was the 11thth th time an Orlando player scored more than 35 points in their freshman year. The team record for most points scored by a rookie is 46, Shaquille O’Neal’s total on February 16, 1993 against the Pistons.
