Fans banned from games following melee at Vermont middle school


ALBURGH, Vt. (WCAX) — Further ramifications of this fight that erupted during a middle school basketball game in Vermont: Fans will be banned from all home games in the district for the remainder of the season.

A brawl broke out on Center Court among adult spectators during a seventh-eighth grade basketball game between Alburgh and St. Albans City in Alburgh on Tuesday. Video of the fight showed that a few young players were also involved.

A man involved in the brawl experienced a medical incident on the drive home. Russell Giroux, 60, of Alburgh, died in hospital. We don’t yet know if the fight contributed to his death.

Now, Grand Isle Superintendent Michael Clark is banning spectators from all home basketball games in the district for the remainder of the season.

The Grand Isle Supervisory Union includes Alburgh, Grand Isle, Isle La Motte, North Hero and South Hero.

Authorities have not yet said what sparked the melee.
