The 2022 Commonwealth Games (CWG), held in Birmingham, was a huge success, with large crowds in the stadiums. Additionally, the cricket match included in this edition saw few close results, with India also ending the campaign with a silver medal, further driving the TRP.

Australia took first place with 178 medals, followed by England and Canada. The Indian contingent grabbed 61 medals and finished fourth.

Where will the CWG 2026 take place?

Previously, the CWG Federation announced that the 2026 edition of the quadrennial event will be held in Victoria from March 17-29. The Opening Ceremony will take place at Melbourne Cricket Ground.

It is the sixth time Australia has hosted the Games, while in the past it has also hosted 1938 Sydney, 1962 Perth, 1982 Brisbane, 2006 Melbourne and 2018 Gold Coast. The Melbourne 2006 is considered one of the most successful editions in the history of the Games.

Here is the official statement from the CWG Federation:

“The Commonwealth Games Federation is delighted to award the 2026 Commonwealth Games to Victoria,” said CGF President Dame Louise Martin.

“This is a very special moment for the Commonwealth Sports Family and on behalf of the whole movement I would like to congratulate Commonwealth Games Australia and Victoria on their successful submission to the Games. We now look forward to a bright future as we work together to host Commonwealth Games like no other.”

The games will take place in the Geelong, Bendigo, Ballarat and Gippsland regions in the different states of Victoria. Certainly hosting these events has helped Australia in terms of jobs, hospitality and the economy.

Victoria has the experience of hosting the Australian Open Tennis Grand Slam and the Melbourne Formula 1 Grand Prix. In addition, the state hosts premier sporting tournaments such as cricket, golf and also Australian Rules Football competitions.

The 2026 edition of the event is expected to see games such as archery and shooting return to the prestigious event.
