Commonwealth Games 2022 Live Day 10: IND W lose by 9 runs against AUS W in final; Kidambi Srikanth wins bronze

The pair of Sharath Kamal and Sreeja Akula win the gold medal in the mixed doubles table tennis finals. 

The Indian pair defeated Malaysia’s Javen Choong and Karen Lyne 11-4, 9-11, 11-5, 11-6 to win the gold medal. I

This is India’s 18th gold at CWG 2022 and the third medal for star paddler Sharath Kamal in this edition.

Rohit Yadav throws the javelin 77.74m in his second attempt. 

DP Manu throws 78.79m in his third attempt. 

India (152 all out) take silver after losing women’s T20 final against Australia (161/8) by 9 runs. 

Tough day for Harmanpreet Kaur, who scored a superb 43-ball 65 in the finals.

The men’s javelin throw final is underway and two Indian athletes (Rohit Yadav and DP Manu) will be in the fray.

DP Manu starts with a 79.04m in his first attempt.

Big wicket for Australia, who suddenly find themselves back into the contest, as India lose Harmanpreet Kaur for 65 off 43 balls. IND W: 121/5 in 15.5 overs (need 41 off 25 balls)

Kidambi Srikanth wins the bronze medal in badminton men’s singles. He defeats Singapore’s Jia Heng Teh 21-15,  21-18. 

However, it was a gritty display by Jia, who looked in discomfort and required medical attention during the second game. However, he chose to continue and even secured some brilliant points before he hits the shuttle out of the playing area.

In response to Australia’s 161/8, India have reached 73/2 after 10 overs. They need 89 more to win in the final 10 overs. Harmanpreet Kaur and Jemimah Rodrigues are batting in the middle.

England’s Liam Pitchford beats India’s G Sathiyan 4-1 in the men’s singles table tennis event. He wins the match 11-5, 4-11, 11-8, 11-9, 11-9. 

Sathiyan will meet England’s Paul Drinkhall in the men’s singles table tennis bronze medal match.

Sathiyan struggles against England’s Liam Pitchford and goes down in the fifth game 9-11. 

Pitchford is leading 3-1 after four games.  

India’s Kidambi Srikanth wins the opening game against Singapore’s Jia Heng Teh in the men’s singles bronze medal match. He closes it 21-15.

England’s Liam Pitchford once again takes the lead against G Sathiyan after closing the third game 11-8. 

The fourth game witnesses a neck-and-neck contest between the two. England at the moment is leading 8-7 in the fourth game.

The first game is underway and India is trailing 8-10 at the moment.

G Sathiyan goes down in the opening game against England’s Liam Pitchford in the men’s singles semifinal. He loses the first game 5-11. 

The Indian paddler bounces back in the second game and closes it 11-4. 

Both are tied at one-game each.

Australia post 161/8 (Beth Mooney 61; Renuka Thakur 2/25) in 20 overs against India in women’s T20 gold medal match

The pair of Saurav Ghosal and Dipika Pallikal beat Australia’s Donna Lobban and Cameron Pilley to win the bronze medal in the mixed doubles squash event. The Indian pair won the match 11-8, 11-4.

Sharath Kamal Achanta storms into the finals of the men’s singles table tennis event. He beats England’s Paul Drinkhall 4-2.

There have been reports of Australia all-rounder Tahlia McGrath returning Covid-19 positive just before the final between IND W and AUS W. 

She is experiencing mild symptoms and after consulting with the medical experts, teams and the match officials, she has been allowed to take part in the contest.

She also batted but was dismissed cheaply on 2(4) is batting at the moment. AUSW 89/3 (11.2 overs)

England’s Paul Drinkhall makes a strong comeback in the third game against India’s Achanta Sharath Kamal. He reaches game point while his opponent is still on 6. 

Sharath saves two game points but falls down 8-11 in the third game.

Australia win toss and opt to bat first against India in the final.

The toss has been delayed in Edgbaston ahead of the CWG gold medal match between India and Australia. 

The Indian women’s cricket team will be in action against Australia for the gold medal. 

The Indian unit have so far put a strong show, and the only hiccup they experienced in their campaign was against Australia in the tournament opener.

India have put an impressing display at CWG 2022, and have won 17 gold medals so far. 

She has won 13 silver, and 19 bronze. 

The Indian pair of Achanta Sharath Kamal and Sathiyan Gnanasekaran lose in the men’s doubles table tennis finals against England’s Paul Drinkhall and Liam Pitchford. They go down 11-8, 8-11, 3-11, 11-7, 4-11 and will have to be content with the silver medal.

THe match is level at 2-2, with Sharath-Sathiyan trailing at 4-5 in the 5th game!

Sharath and Sathiyan are 9-6 up in their fourth game of their men’s gold medal final. Their opponents lead 2-1.

Nikhat Zareen wins a gold medal in the women’s 50kg division after securing a 5:0 win by unanimous decision against Northern Ireland’s Carly McNaul. 

India’s third gold in boxing. 

Nikhat starts the second round with an aggressive approach and is still leading the bout with a 5-0 advantage.

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty storm into the finals of the men’s doubles badminton. They defeat Malaysia’s Peng Soon Chan and Kian Meng Tan 2-0.

While it was disappointment for India in the women’s doubles badminton semifinals, the men’s doubles pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty have put a solid show against Malaysia’s Peng Soon Chan and Kian Meng Tan in the final four contest. 

They win the opening game 21-6 and have taken a 10-6 lead in the second game.

India’s Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand go down against Malaysia’s Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan in straight games in the women’s doubles badminton semifinal.

Malaysia win the contest 13-21, 16-21

India’s Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand had extended the lead to 13-11, but they have squandered it and it is Malaysia, who now have a one-point advantage. 

But Indians are holding on to their nerves and are producing a great fight.

The Indian pair has started the opening game on a slow note and are trailing 9-14.

The women’s 4x100m relay team (Dutee Chand, Hima Das, Srabani Nanada and Jyothi Yarraji) finish 5th in the finals. They complete the event in 43.81s. 

Nigeria won gold with 43.81s. England finished second 42.41s, followed by Jamaica, who completed the race in 43.08s.

Disappointment for Kidambi Srikanth in the men’s singles badminton finals against Malaysia’s Ng Yong Tze. The Indian shuttler goes down 10-21 in the second game and with this he loses the contest 1-2. He will now fight for the bronze medal.

Yangzi Liu beats Sreeja Akula 4-3 in the women’s singles bronze medal match

Srikanth loses the 2nd game 19-21. The game goes into a decider! If Srikanth wins this, it will be an all-Indian final in men’s singles. Lakshya Sen has already won his match.

What a match this is turning out to be! Sreeja Akula wins the sixth game 11-9. The bronze medal contest is going into the decider.

Another athletics for India! Annu Rani claims BRONZE in women’s javelin final. She doesn’t manage to better her best throw (60m) in the final attempt. She takes the third spot.

What a thriller! Yangzi Liu wins the fourth game 15-13 against Sreeja Akula to take a 3-2 lead in the women’s singles bronze medal match. This game could go right down to the wire.

Meanwhile, Annu Rani has moved into medal position with a 60m throw in women’s javelin final. She is currently placed third on the list.

Lakshya Sen enters the final with a 2-1 win over Jia Heng Teh in the men’s singles semifinal. He wins 21-10, 18-21, 21-16 against the Singaporean shuttler. One more medal for India!

The medals keep on coming!!! Sandeep Kumar wins BRONZE in Men’s 10000m Race Walk with personal best timing of 38:49.21.

Historic gold and silver for Indian athletics in men’s triple jump at the Games! Eldhose Paul brings home the gold with a jump of 17.03m and Abdulla Aboobacker grabs silver with an effort of 17.02m, while Praveen Chithravel 16.89m finishes fourth in the final.

Women’s Javelin Throw final featuring India’s Annu Rani and Shilpa Rani is underway!

Second boxing GOLD for India at the 2022 Games! Amit Panghal bags gold by defeating Kieran MacDonald in men’s 51kg final. 

The Indian was relentless in his attacks. He wins the yellow metal by unanimous verdict in the final.

India now have 15 gold medals at the ongoing competition.

Amit Panghal has won both the rounds! One judge rules in favour of MacDonald in the second round but Panghal has been dominant. All he needs is to stay safe and clean in the third round.

We now have Amit Panghal competing against Kieran MacDonald of England in men’s 51kg final. Can India win two gold medals within minutes?

GOLD for Nitu Ghanghas! She wins the final by unanimous decision. The Indian bags the yellow metal in Women’s 48kg Boxing.

What a fantastic result for the Indian pugilist, who threw some strong punches and combos. She bags gold with a unanimous 5-0 decision over Demie-Jade Resztan of England.

Five straight points for Jia Min Yeo and there’s a stunning silence from Indian fans at the venue. Sindhu trails 8-4 in the first game.

Penalty corner for India… and Udita’s shot is cleared off the goalline. It remains 1-0 in India’s favour in the third quarter.

Third goal of the tournament for Salima Tete and it’s come at a crucial time. Sharmila misses from an open goal but Tete was quick to hit the ball from a sharp angle. India lead at halftime!

Pooja Gehlot won the bronze medal in the Women’s Freestyle 50 kg category on Saturday. But she was not satisfied with her result and wanted a gold medal.

“I apologise to my compatriots. I wished that the National Anthem to be played here, but I lost in the semifinal. But I will learn from my mistakes, and work on them,” said the wrestler while interacting with the media.

India created some great chances but it’s been fairly equal in the first quarter. Both teams sprayed the ball from one flank to another but failed to convert. It’s 0-0 at the end of first quarter.

After Nitu, Amit Panghal will compete in men’s 51kg final. Panghal, who had won silver in the previous edition, beat Patrick Chinyemba of Zambia with a 5-0 unanimous decision win to storm into the final.

Panghal will take on Kiaran McDonald at 3:15 pm.

Nitu Ghanghas kicks off boxing action at 3:00 pm with the women’s 48kg Final. The Indian takes on Demie-Jade for the yellow metal.

Nitu entered the final by defeating Priyanka Dhillion of Canada in the semifinal. The match lasted for only one minute and thirty seconds. Nitu’s boxing prowess was such that the match could not go beyond the second round and Nitu won it via referee stoppage.

In athletics, Abdulla Aboobacker, Eldhose Paul, Praveen Chitravel will be competing in men’s Triple Jump Final. The event starts at 2:45 pm.

PV Sindhu headlines badminton action along with Lakshya Sen and Kidambi Srikanth. The three shuttlers play their singles semifinal. Badminton action starts at 2:20 pm with Sindhu’s last-four clash against Jia Min Yeo of Singapore.

The women’s hockey team lost to Australia in the semifinal that was a stopwatch controversy in the shoot-out. 

Australia’s Rosie Malone missed her shot but to the dismay of the Indian team and fans, the forward was given a second chance as a technical official, B Morgan of England, had failed to start the clock on time.

Indians will be looking to play with a different mindset today and finish the tournament with a bronze.

In table tennis, Sreeja Akula will play her bronze medal match in women’s singles. Achanta Sharath Kamal will chase gold alongside G Sathiyan, who will compete in men’s doubles final. Sharath Kamal and Sathiyan will also be seen in men’s singles semi-finals, and it could be an all-Indian final if both advance further.

In athletics, Avinash Sable won a historic silver medal in the men’s 3000m steeplechase at the CWG while Priyanka Goswami won silver and created history by winning the first-ever medal by an Indian woman in the 10km race walk.

The spotlight today will be on Shilpa Rani, Annu Rani, Rohit Yadav and DP Manu in the javelin throw finals. Amit, Sandeep Kumar will compete in Men’s 10,000m Race Walk Final.

The Indian women’s hockey team looks to put behind the stopwatch controversy and claim bronze at the 2022 Games. They take on New Zealand for a podium finish.

Boxing also saw Indians sealing medals. Amit Panghal, Sagar Ahlawat, Nitu Ghangas and boxing champion Nikhat Zareen confirmed either a silver or a gold for India, while Jasmine Lamboria (bronze), Muhammad Hussamuddin (bronze), Rohit Tokas (bronze) walked away with medals.

The boxing contingent will eye the yellow metal today, with Panghal, Nitu, Sagar and Zareen in action.

Wrestlers ruled the previous day. The Indian wrestling contingent captured every medal that was there to grab. Ravi Dahiya, Naveen, Deepak Nehra, Pooja Gehlot, Pooja Sihag and Vinesh Phogat won all the medals on the second and final day of the wrestling competition.

India has won 36 medals so far, which includes 12 gold, 11 silver and 12 bronze medals.
