Best-Selling Games And Consoles Of September 2022 Revealed

The NPD Group has released its latest monthly sales report, covering September 2022, showing which games and consoles have been best selling in the US. The report also highlights the overall performance of the US gaming industry.

Total US video game spending in September – games, hardware and accessories – was $4.1 billion. That was down 4% from September 2021. However, hardware saw year-over-year gains. The PS5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles saw double-digit percentage growth. Year to date, total video game spending in the US reached $38.4 billion, down 8%.

Specifically for games, spending in September 2022 fell by 7% to $3.4 billion. FIFA 23 was September’s best-selling game, followed by Madden NFL 23 and NBA 2K23. Splatoon 3 came in at number 4, which is an impressive result considering the NPD chart doesn’t include digital sales from Nintendo.

FIFA 23 at the top of the charts is also notable because it launched on September 27, which was right at the end of the NPD reporting period for that month (August 27 to October 1).

At hardware, revenue rose 19% year over year, with September marking the third straight month of double-digit percentage growth. NPD said that better supply of the PS5 in particular led to the increases in console spending. The PS5 was September’s top-selling console by unit count and dollar sales, with Nintendo Switch second by unit count and Xbox second by dollar sales.

For accessories, September spending was $174 million, flat compared to September 2021. This is actually good news, however, as September 2022 was the first month since October 2021 in which the accessories category saw no year-on-year decrease in spending. The Xbox Carbon Black Controller was the top-selling accessory for unit and dollar sales in September.

In the mobile gaming division, spend was down 5% year over year. “Compared to other mobile apps, gaming accounted for 54% of total mobile spend, up from 60% a year ago. While September game installs generally experience a seasonal slowdown, this year’s decline was particularly sharp, driven by a 40% year-on-year decline in hypercasual game installs,” NPD said. “September game installs were down year-on-year 3%, hitting its lowest level since February 2019.”
