5 Huntsville area high school football games to watch in Week 10


PRICEVILLE (9-0) AT RANDOLPH (7-1)

Time/Place: 7 p.m., Friday, SportsMed Field, Huntsville

Last week: Class 4A, No. 4, Priceville beat Westminster Christian 72-45. Randolph defeated New Hope 52-12.

Region: Both teams are 6-0 in Region 8 and share first place.

The Thin: This is the de facto regional championship game. Priceville’s only regional title came in 2015. Randolph has never won a regional crown. … Priceville is in the midst of the longest winning streak in program history. The Bulldogs are one win away from tying the program mark of wins in a season set last year. … Priceville set a program record for points scored in a game in defeating Westminster. Three Bulldogs running backs — Jaylen Mosely, Mason Cartee and Blitz Clemons — eclipsed 100 yards in the rush. The trio combined for nine rushing touchdowns. … Randolph’s 379 points this season is a program record for the regular season, beating 2021’s 369. … Raiders quarterback Andrew Hunter threw six touchdown passes against New Hope. Four went to Nic Strong. … Priceville and Randolph have met twice before, splitting the matchups over 2019 and 2018.

FLORENCE (7-2) AT SPARKMAN (5-3)

Time/Place: 7 p.m., Friday, Sparkman Field, Harvest

Last week: Florence beat Grissom 42-6. Sparkman defeated Huntsville 55-14.

Region: Florence is 5-1 in Class 7A Region 4 and secured second place. Sparkman is 3-3 and part of a four-team tie for third place.

The Thin: These teams come into it with very different mindsets – Florence has cashed his playoff ticket while Sparkman is struggling for his postseason life. … The Senators are battling for the region’s last two playoff spots, along with Bob Jones, James Clemens and Huntsville. Sparkman won against Huntsville but lost to Bob Jones and James Clemens in the last two weeks. … Florence forced four turnovers against Grissom and kept the Tigers on 8 yards rushing. … Sparkman’s Josh Ward threw four touchdown passes against Huntsville, and Sean Williams returned two interceptions for a TD. … Florence is 12-2 against Sparkman, including a 42-0 win last season. The Senators’ last win in the series came in 2006.

HUNTSVILLE (4-4) AT AUSTIN (7-2)

Time/Place: 7 p.m. Friday, Austin Stadium, Decatur

Last week: Class 7A, Austin in 7th place, defeated Bob Jones 28-26. Huntsville lost to Sparkman 55-14.

Region: Austin is 6-0 in Region 4 and has secured first place. Huntsville is 3-3 and part of a four-team tie for third place.

The Thin: Austin is the Class 7A, Region 4 champion for the second time in three years. …The difference in the Black Bears’ win over Bob Jones was two extra points blocked. De’Air Young threw three touchdown passes to lead Austin’s offense. … Thirteen-year-old Black Bears coach Jeremy Perkins won his 90th game last week. … Huntsville has lost its last two games. The Panthers trailed Sparkman 21-14 at halftime last week before conceding 34 unanswered points. … Huntsville is fighting for its first playoff spot since 2017. The Panthers are tied 1-2 against the other teams. … Austin defeated Huntsville 31-21 last season for his sixth straight win over the Panthers. All four Black Bears touchdowns came on the floor. Huntsville leads the series 22-15.

HAZEL GREEN (4-4) AT ARAB (8-1)

Time/Place: 7pm, Friday, Arab City Schools Sports Complex

Last week: Class 5A, Arabian ranked 10th, defeated Guntersville 34-20. Class 6A Hazel Green blinded Mae Jemison 54-0.

The Thin: Arab’s win over Guntersville clinched the Knights’ first regional title since 1993. … Arab needs another win to tie the program record for single-season wins. According to AHSFHS.org, the Knights won nine games in 1993, 1970, 1958 and 1944. … Arabs Drake Franklin rushed for 160 yards and two touchdowns against Guntersville. … Hazel Green is tied for the playoffs for the first time since 2018. The Trojans are No. 3 in Class 6A, Region 8. … Hazel Green’s win over Mae Jemison sparked a three-game losing streak. Griffin Fowler threw four touchdown passes to win. … Arab and Hazel Green last met in 2003. The series is 3:3.

COLLINSVILLE (6-2) ON NORTH SAND MOUNTAIN (4-4)

Time/Place: 7pm, Friday, Dobbins Field, Higdon

Last week: Collinsville edged Whitesburg Christian 44-42. North Sand Mountain beat Section 40-8.

Region: Both teams are 4-2 in Class 2A Region 7 and tied for third place.

The Thin: Both teams qualified for the playoffs. The winner of this matchup gets region number 3, while the loser is number 4. … Collinsville makes the playoffs for the first time since its run to the semifinals in 2019. North Sand Mountain enters the postseason for the eighth year in a row. … Collinsville’s Luis Ailon kicked in a 27-yard field goal with a second remaining to beat Whitesburg and earn the Panthers’ playoff berth. Collinsville quarterback Mason McAteer was responsible for six touchdowns — four passing and two rushing. … North Sand Mountain’s Landon Keller completed eight passes against Section, five of which were touchdowns. …Collinsville is 4-2 against North Sand Mountain. The teams last met in 2019, with the Panthers prevailing in the regular season and quarterfinals. The Bison last defeated Collinsville in 1989.
