Here are some of my favorite gluten-free and vegan-friendly cookbooks:
The Gluten-Free Vegan Cookbook: Even my mom’s non gluten-free, non vegan friends have given this book rave reviews. My mom made the antioxidant chili when I was last home and it didn’t last long! Susan O’brien’s recipes are simple and unfussy, which is why I love them. Many of the dessert recipes call for cane sugar, but otherwise, you can’t really go wrong here. O’briend also tends to limit the use of other common allergens, such as soy and corn, and does provide some recipes that are sugar-free as well. Do note that she does use oats in a few recipes, which aren’t tolerated by all Celiacs. Otherwise, this cookbook is ideal for those suffering from several conditions.
The Gluten-free, Sugar-free Cooking: Another great cookbook from Susan O’brien, this one contains a few recipes calling for meat, but several vegetarian and vegan options as well. This was one of my first allergy-friendly cookbooks since giving up wheat, dairy and sugar, and it’s still a constant resource and inspiration.
The Spunky Coconut: Ok. I admit. I haven’t actually tried any recipes from this book. But my mom owns it and everytime I’m visiting, it’s the first of her many cookbooks that I crack open for inspiration or for the beautiful pictures. I love that Kelly, who shares many other great recipes on her blog, uses stevia and other healthy ingredients. Since many of the recipes do call for eggs, you may not want to purchase if you’re vegan or egg-free (though I’m sure some experimentation would be fun), but for gluten-free, low-sugar diets, this book could be really useful.
